Paint and Trim Out Your New Warbird!

Covering Preparation

Now that everything is glued together, I would go over all the covered surfaces (except the tail group) with a hot HOT covering iron. Make sure you keep moving! Once its all drum tight again, you can decide what you want to do. Here is what I did:

Covering Buffing
I wanted as much of a scale finish as possible (though I could have done better). So, I took some really fine steel wool from a hardware store, and scuffed up the silver Ultracote a bit. This does two things. First, it keeps the covering from looking like tin foil. Second, it allows for paint to adhere better.

Next, I looked on the Net for pictures of the Ki61 from WWII or modelers who have painted their plastic 61's from scale drawings. Now that I have a picture of what I want it to look like, I grabbed some leftover clear blue Monokote and ironed that on for the canopy. I put red Uline tape on the nose (its going to get scuffed up and will be easily reparable) and black Uline tape for the top of the fuse from nose to canopy. Then I took the warbird and the picture I printed out from the net to.....the hobby store! The guys here are really good at airbrushing and painting, so I thought I would leave it to them. They painted the design I wanted on the covering, then put a dull cote on to reduce the glare from the silver Ultracote.

Now that I have the warbird back (looking awesome!) its time to finish trimming out the decorative aspects. I bought two sheets of self-adhesive trim (yellow and red) and had some white left over from another project. Mainly I just followed the picture I used from the Net to place the trim. I couldnt find red circles for the Zero emblem, so I just nabbed a round cap from the kitchen, traced that on the trim sheets and cut it out.

Time to Set Up Your Control Throws and Mixes!
